Frequently Asked Questions for Active Volunteers

How do I schedule my volunteer shifts?
NTRC uses a web-based scheduling system to coordinate volunteers for each lesson. Once you’re an active volunteer, you’ll receive a personal login and instructions. This system helps ensure all sessions are safely staffed. Find the portal and schedule here.

Is the volunteer schedule different in the summer?
Yes. Due to the heat and our summer camp programming, the volunteer schedule is limited between June and August. Additionally, there are no therapeutic riding lessons in August and on certain holidays throughout the year.

Do I need to renew my volunteer paperwork?
Yes. All volunteers must complete annual renewal paperwork to maintain active status. These forms will be sent to you directly by the Volunteer Manager.

Is a background screening required?
Yes. All active volunteers must complete a background screening every three years to continue volunteering in our programs. You’ll be notified by the Volunteer Manager when your rescreening is due.

What should I wear to volunteer?
Please wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals, crocs, or flip-flops) and comfortable, appropriate clothing suitable for working around horses. We recommend long pants and avoiding loose jewelry or dangling items for safety.

What time should I arrive for my volunteer shift?
Volunteers should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled shift to check in, review the lesson plan, and be prepared for rider arrivals.

What if I need to cancel a shift?
We understand that plans change. If you need to cancel, please update your status in the scheduling system as soon as possible, and if it’s a last-minute cancellation, notify the Volunteer Manager directly so alternate coverage can be arranged.
